Describe, in detail, the hopelessness theory of depression developed by Abramson, Metalsky, and Alloy (1989).
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: The hopelessness theory of depression (HTD) was based on the learned helplessness theory of depression. The hopelessness theory of depression suggests that depressive symptoms are most likely to occur when two factors are present at the same time: (1) a vulnerable person and (2) negative environmental circumstances. Although either factor by itself may be only loosely connected to risk of depression, the co-occurrence of the factors is thought to be especially likely to make people susceptible to becoming depressed.
