Discuss the ways in which advertising differs from publicity

What will be an ideal response?

• In advertising, because you pay for the ad, you control its content, size, location, reach, and frequency. In publicity, you do not retain control of any of these elements. You must earn everything, including how a story is covered, how much is covered, and where it may appear, if it appears at all.
• Advertising costs considerably more than publicity, which while not free, involves minimal cost. The rough rule of thumb is that publicity costs about 10% as much as advertising expenditures.
• Because publicity appears in the news rather than as an advertisement, it implicitly carries more credibility because it has earned third-party endorsement from the news sources using it.
