Describe how to commence researching issues in a particular client’s case.

What will be an ideal response?

he first step in researching the law is to analyze the facts of the client’s case. Identify the parties, place or things involved, the legal issue presented and any defenses raised. The purpose of fact analysis is to identify key terms or descriptive words that apply to the fact situation. Once descriptive words are listed, these words can be looked up in various kinds of indexes to locate the applicable law or used to formulate an online search query. The researcher must also decide what kind of law might apply to the facts. Do the facts present a question that is likely to be answered in statutes or in court opinions? Would it be a matter decided by federal law or by state law? Refer to the answer to the previous question for additional information.
