The answer(s) to Question 1 should then be linked with the ‘cycle of research’ (Figure 4.2)
and the idea of a ‘model’, or conceptualisation, of such a reality by which a researcher (Sarah
or Robert in this specific instance) might be attracted.
A strong ‘model’ as envisaged by Robert in the example is simply about drawing out
reasonable connections between ideas, concepts and theories as examined in the secondary
research and that can eventually be verified.
A weak ‘model’ as imagined by Sarah is instead accepting the fact that it may not be
possible to arrive at a workable conceptualisation (conceptual framework). In this instance,
there is a tension towards building a theory (with the small t...) for further consideration.
In other words, researchers should be invited to reflect on the ever-evolving loop from
theory to date (and theory), or from data to theory (and data).
