The directory path starts out with /, which indicates the main root directory of the root file system. If other file systems are to be used, a directory is created on the root file system.
Then, using the mount command, the UNIX/Linux operating system is told to associate the root inode of another file system to the empty directory. This process can be repeated many times, and there is no hard limit to the number of file systems that can be mounted this way.
