In a forming/orientation stage, the appropriate management style is usually autocratic. A manager tells the group members what to do and how to do it and closely oversees their performance.
During the storming/dissatisfaction stage, the appropriate management style is consultative. A manager is highly directive and oversees group members’ performance playing the task role, but at the same time, is highly supportive, including their input, playing the maintenance role, and encouraging members to continue to work toward objectives.
In the norming/resolution stage, the appropriate management style is participative. The manager and group members share decision making.
During the performing/production stage, the appropriate management style is empowerment. The group members are given the authority to do their task in their own way and to make decisions on their own.
