Kiara, an American business manager, has paid a government official for a work permit for some of her employees in a foreign host country. This kind of bribe is very common in the host country and is not even prosecuted by the law. Why is this behavior unethical?
What will be an ideal response?
For one, Kiara’s behavior is illegal. Even though the host country does not
prosecute it, Kiara, as an American, must abide by American laws when conducting
business even in a foreign company. If caught, she could end up in jail in the U.S. for
this behavior. Secondly, just because this behavior is accepted in the other country
does not mean it is ethical. It is unethical, and her use of a bribe reinforces and even
grows the corrupt relationship between business and government there. This will make
it more difficult for the country to improve the rule of law and adopt widespread ethical
business practices.
