Explain the importance of preventing storm water runoff.
What will be an ideal response?
Preventing storm water runoff is not only a green requirement; it is federal law. The jobsite creates many different kinds of pollutants that can enter our streams, lakes, and other sources of freshwater. Every vehicle on site is fueled by gas or diesel, which is considered a hazardous material with specific cleanup and reporting requirements but is not the only hazardous material found on the jobsite. Properly disposing of excess concrete and concrete washout is another site consideration. A site needs to be ready for the potential storms that will occur, thus the need for storm water pollution prevention plans that begin with recognizing the hazardous materials on the job site. The plan also should illustrate how those materials will be handled during the process of completing the project and in case of inclement weather. The plan should also include identification of responsible parties and detail possible penalties if the plan is not implemented.
