How does alcohol consumption come into play with regards to hooking up?

Hooking up commonly follows a lot of drinking, with men averaging 5 drinks prior to hooking up and women averaging 3 drinks. Because alcohol lowers people's inhibitions, it plays a significant role in hooking up. College students indicated that drinking allows them to do things they are too self-conscious to do while sober, and girls indicate that drinking allows them to be more sexual and more sexually free than while sober. A few of the college students reported that alcohol played a role in them going sexually further than they normally would.
