Distinguish mid-latitude steppe from mid-latitude desert and describe where the two exist in the United States

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Semideserts are transitional zones that separate the true deserts from adjacent climates. They are also called steppe climates, with reference to the associated vegetation type consisting of short grasses. True deserts are so dry that only a sparse vegetation consisting entirely of xerophytic species (that is, species adapted to drought conditions) can take hold.
