Discuss the two fluid compartments and the percentage of water each compartment contributes to total body water
What will be an ideal response?
There are two basic places, or compartments, where we find body fluids: inside the cells, or the (1 ) intracellular compartment; and the area outside the cells, the (2 ) extracellular compartment. The intracellular compartment is trillions of microscopic compartments inside the plasma membranes of our cells. The fluid within the intracellular compartment is cytosol (or intracellular fluid, ICF), which accounts for about 60% of the body's fluids, or about 25 liters. The extracellular compartment is filled with extracellular fluid (ECF), made up of a variety of fluids. Two of the fluids are plasma, the fluid portion of the blood, and interstitial fluid, the fluid in the spaces between the cells. Plasma accounts for approximately 8% (3 liters) of the total body water, and interstitial fluid for about 32% (13 liters).
