Explain one possibility for the gender difference in alcohol use and abuse in men and women.
What will be an ideal response?
One possibility has to do with gender roles; in short, women’s drinking is restricted and men’s drinking is encouraged. That is, heavy drinking and drunkenness are more socially disapproved for women than for men. Therefore, women must limit their alcohol consumption to avoid this social disapproval. Also, men experience more social pressure to drink than women do. Another possibility has to do with how female bodies respond to alcohol. That is, alcohol has greater bioavailability in women than in men, such that, given equivalent doses of ethanol, a woman will experience a higher blood alcohol level than a man, even when body weight is controlled for.
