Why do some historians consider Greece the cradle of western civilization?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. In addition to the geographic location on continental Europe, as opposed to earlier civilizations in the Near East, several historical and epic sources distinguish Greece as being Western in contrast to the Asians of Persia or the Near East, specifically, Homer's The Iliad as well as Herodotus' Histories. But the specific characteristics that historians use to distinguish Greece from the other areas we've studied to this point include a division of society and government from religion and law; an emphasis on "the triumph of rationalism" because Greeks invented philosophy and the quest for rational explanations rather than supernatural explanations; the development of democracy as a characteristic similar to Western political forms; and the development of Golden Age literature.
