Why do chromosomes always come in pairs in higher-order animals?

What will be an ideal response?

In higher-order animals, chromosomes are always brought together in pairs and matched. The chromosomes separate as the cell divides, and each cell receives one of each chromosome from each pair. The new sperm cells contain only half the chromosomes of the original cell. When the sperm unites with the egg at conception, the original number of chromosomes is restored, because the sperm furnishes half the chromosomes and the egg furnishes the other half.
