Around the world the decline of temperate forests has largely been reversed, however, tropical forests still face many challenges. Describe the current state of the world’s tropical forests. What social forces are driving or preventing the destruction and degradation of these ecosystems? In your discussion, address how countries which are home to these forests can or do address issues like deforestation and what obstacles they face in doing so. Be specific, using examples from your text

What will be an ideal response?

Tropical forests are generally located in developing societies and have often been exploited through colonization, trade practices, export economies, etc. Many of these nations are poor and lack strong social institutions. Many social forces drive the degradation of the land, including economic drives, agriculture, lack of protections under the law, and population growth. Developed nations as well as home nations contribute to the issues and often exploit these lands. Prevention is difficult for various reasons including lack of harmonization when it comes to definitions, lack of resources, limited motivation or alternative, etc. Prevention could include alternative development projects, improved regulation and enforcement, foreign investment, and awareness raising. Students should provide details from the text that illustrate their understanding.
