In which client with chronic airflow limitation would you expect to find dependent edema?

A. 25-year-old with cold-induced asthma
B. 65-year-old with exercise-induced asthma
C. 55- year-old with chronic bronchitis
D. 45-year-old with moderate emphysema

C
Dependent edema is associated with right-side heart failure. As the pressures within the lung tis-sue increase, the right ventricle must work harder to move blood into the pulmonary vasculature. When the heart weakens from this exertion (cor pulmonale), blood backs up in the venous sys-tem, increasing vessel hydrostatic pressure and causing dependent edema to form. Chronic bronchitis is most frequently associated with cor pulmonale.
