Hard-won civil liberties have slipped away as President Putin attempts to consolidate political power and increase the authority of the central government. His presidency has limited press freedoms, silenced critics and has more direct control of the nominating of candidates for many of the Russian governorships and mayoral positions. Many of the country's media outlets are now under government control and/or ownership. Many outspoken journalists and critics have died under suspicious circumstances.
