Describe the methodology and findings of Bandura's Bobo Doll experiment.
What will be an ideal response?
The experiment involved three groups of preschool-age children. One group watched a film of an adult playing violently with a Bobo doll (a child-size inflated plastic clown, weighted at the bottom so that it returns upright when knocked down). The second group watched an adult ignore the Bobo doll and play with Tinkertoys. A third group was not exposed to any model. All of the children were then exposed to a situation designed to frustrate them. They were put in a room with attractive toys but instructed not to play with them. Finally, they were taken to a room filed with aggressive toys (the Bobo doll, dart guns, and a mallet) and nonaggressive toys (Tinkertoys, crayons, and plastic farm animals). The children exposed to the aggressive model made more aggressive responses and imitated the behaviors of the model. The study showed that exposure to aggressive models can increase aggression by observers.
