Diatomaceous earth is the fossilized remains of the siliceous tests of marine diatoms. When these die they sink and form oozes on the bottom. At some point, some of these oozes were uncovered by the sea and formed diatomaceous earth. This material is used today as an abrasive cleaner, as filtration material and in various other industries.
