What was the purpose of the conferences attended by Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt? What was accomplished?
What will be an ideal response?
The three leaders met several times during the war to determine what the postwar European landscape would look like in political and geographic terms. Stalin presented a number of demands at this time. His demands were deferred, but they included a buffer zone across eastern Europe, something that Churchill was privately very concerned about. At the root of the problem was that the Allies were in a relationship of necessity to overthrow Hitler, but when the war was over, they would revert to being ideologically opposed to one another: communism's goal to overtake the world meant the elimination of capitalism. At Yalta, the three leaders laid the foundations for the creation of the United Nations, determined policies for liberating and dividing Germany, allowed postwar Poland and eastern Europe to fall primarily within the Soviet sphere of influence, and arranged for the Soviet Union's entry into war against Japan.
