Let us return to the topic of birthing magic, and consider two examples, one from Panama and one from Malaysia. In both, midwives and shamans help the mother in moving the baby down the birth canal and out into the world. But they do so by drawing on very different sets of images and values. Cuna society, in Panama, holds high the culture of heroes and battles. There, a shaman, someone who can be possessed by good spirits, sings to help childbirth. In his song the shaman describes in painstaking detail the events leading up to his own arrival at the woman’s houses, the woman experiencing pain, the midwife coming to call him, and then the journey of the friendly spirits. Now contrast the chants recited by a healer in a Malay village studied by Carol Laderman. As in the Cuna case, the
ritual specialist only intervenes when the midwife can no longer cope with the difficult birth. The specialist, called a “bomoh,” recites a story about God’s creation of the world and of the first couple, and then about the creation of the individual human. Even if the woman does not hear every detail of the story, women are, says Laderman, soothed by its familiar references.
