Why were the two Keck 400" telescopes placed together atop Mauna Kea?

What will be an ideal response?

The light of both telescopes is combined with an optical interferometer to give resolution of the pair equal to the separation of the two telescopes on the top of the mountain, much better than can be done with any single telescope on its own.
