Explain the importance of trust in Erikson's psychosocial stage approach to personality development.

What will be an ideal response?

According to Erikson, developing a sense of trust is the first developmental task of life. Infants must know that the world is a safe place where their basic needs will be met. For this reason, it is important for caregivers to be warn, affectionate, and responsive. If caregivers do this, the infant will develop a sense of trust in caregivers and the world in general. If caregivers are neglectful or inconsistent in meeting the infant's needs, the infant will feel a sense of mistrust toward the world and interpersonal relationships. The sense of trust or mistrust in this first year influences how individuals approach the following stages of development. When interaction with adults inspires trust, infants are more likely to feel comfortable exploring the world, which results in learning and social and emotional development.
