ANSWER: Newton’s first law of motion states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (and travel at a constant velocity along a straight line) as long as no force is exerted on the object. So, to start air moving, to speed it up, to slow it down, or even to change its direction requires the action of an external force. Newton’s second law states that the force exerted on an object equals its mass times the acceleration produced. From this relationship we can see that, when the mass of an object is constant, the force acting on the object is directly related to the acceleration that is produced.
