According to Mintzberg, there are three interdependent behaviors that managers must possess. What are these roles?
What will be an ideal response?
Mintzberg proposed that these 10 managerial roles require three interdependent behaviors: (1)
interpersonal, (2) informational, and (3) decisional. In their interpersonal role, managers as
leaders guide and motivate employees; their primary purpose is to integrate the needs of the
organization with the needs of the employee. In this interpersonal role, they perform a variety of
ceremonial functions including providing tours, taking customers to lunch (figureheads), and
serving to link the organization with the external environment. In their informational role,
managers as monitors collect information from internal and external sources (clients, reports,
conferences) that keep them informed of issues and trends. As a disseminator, managers filter
and pass on factual, value-based information to superiors and employees where they then serve
the role of spokesperson. In their decisional roles, managers serve as: (1) entrepreneurs, making
changes freely to improve the organization while adapting to changing conditions; (2)
disturbance handlers, addressing employee conflict and disputes between units in the company;
(3) resource allocators, scheduling and prioritizing how time will be spent at work; and, as (4)
negotiators, intervening on behalf of the organization in non-routine situations with individuals
and groups that come into contact with the organization
