Retelling, a simple technique often neglected in the classroom, promotes comprehension and clarifies text structure. It focuses on meaning. To retell a story, children must understand the components, analyze the language, gain a sense of story structure, and use cognitive tools to remember points in sequence and to use more complex sentences in expressing them. The three levels of retelling are:
1 Pretelling (explaining everyday tasks or simple activities)
2 Guided retelling (recalling story elements first with illustrations, then props, then story maps or graphic organizers, or reenactments)
3 Written retelling (identifying patterns of development and writing the structured steps of a story, using imagination as well as recall)
