Is it realistic to apply the conservation of momentum to real world collisions where external forces act?

What will be an ideal response?

Yes, in a collision the force each object exerts on the other acts only over a brief time interval and is very strong relative to the other forces. If the momenta immediately before and after the collision is measured, momentum will be very nearly conserved.
