Describe the difference between positive and negative reinforcement. Give an example of each

What will be an ideal response?

Positive reinforcement is the addition of a reinforcing stimulus to increase a desirable behavior. In contrast, negative reinforcement is the elimination of a stimulus to increase a desirable behavior. In positive reinforcement, the stimulus is desired; in negative reinforcement, the elimination of the stimulus is desired. For example, each time a child turns in completed homework, the teacher provides a token for a child to collect and ?buy? items. The token is the tangible positive reinforcement for completion of homework. An example of a negative reinforcement is if a teacher eliminates the math homework for a class on days in which a class works for an entire math period without disruption. The elimination of the homework reinforces the good behavior in math class.
