Describe prelinguistic milieu teaching
What will be an ideal response?
It is an evidence-based, early intervention strategy for teaching young children with intellectual disabilities important prelinguistic skills. These include gesturing, vocalizing, and making eye contact; skills that are the foundation for language development. It teaches children to make frequent, clear requests or comments with gestures or sounds while looking at the person with whom they are communicating. The steps include: prompting the child to communicate; prompting the child to initiate; vocally imitating the child's vocalizations; complying with the child's request; restating the communication act as a question of statement; acknowledging the communicative act; and talking to the child. One should always follow the child's lead and focus on things he or she is interested in. Opportunities for communication can be created by placing things in the environment that the child is likely to be interested in. Children learn best when instruction matches their interests and abilities.
