Describe the concept of generalizability as it relates to single-subject designs. Why is generalizability important and how is it established?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Varies.
In single-subject designs, generalizability relates to external validity. Researchers show the effectiveness of their interventions by applying them to different settings, clients, communities, or problems. The extent to which an intervention can actually make a difference (its validity) is established through direct replication, systematic replication, and clinical replication. Direct replication is repeating the procedures exactly for a different client. Systematic replication involves repeating the experiment in different settings using different providers and other related behaviors. Systematic replication can help show the limitations or boundaries of the usefulness of a given intervention. Clinical replication involves the combining of different interventions into a clinical package to treat multiple problems.
