List some measures that small business owners can take to prevent crime and reduce workplace violence.

What will be an ideal response?

Small business owners need to practice crime prevention to reduce risks and protect their assets. Not only do they need to prevent major crimes, such as armed robbery, theft, and white-collar crimes, but they also need protection from trespassing, vandalism, workplace violence and harassment. An awareness of the potential dangers helps to minimize the risks involved and reduces losses from crime. It is impossible to have a security program that will prevent all criminal acts, so one can only hope to minimize their occurrence and severity. In order to reduce workplace violence one must work at "keeping the peace." Steven and Jane Bahls recommend the following:

a. Adopt a zero-tolerance policy.
b. Screen carefully.
c. Train supervisors to recognize personality changes and warning signs.
d. Defuse disputes.
e. Check and double-check security.
f. Terminate with care-then change the locks.
