What is augmentative and alternative communication? Provide examples of various types of AAC and describes the benefits of AAC for individuals with ASD.

What will be an ideal response?

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) comprises all forms of communication other than oral speech that can be used to express needs, wants, or ideas (Boyd et al., 2015).AAC includes the use of low-tech tools, such as communication boards and graphic symbols, where users can point to what they want or exchange a symbol signifying what they want (PECS), to more high-tech devices including speech generating devices, and many things in between. For children with significantly delayed speech development, or for those who can speak but have difficulty with communication competence, alternative methods are introduced that range from low-tech to more high-tech.Whether they use PECS or more sophisticated technology like iPads or speech generating devices, individuals with ASD can be taught other ways to express their intentions or needs.
