Discuss the factors responsible for the increase in interracial marriages.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. The increase in intermarriage is due to many interrelated factors-both micro and macro level-that include everyday contact and changing attitudes. For example, individuals tend to date and marry people they see on a regular basis. The higher the educational level, the greater the potential for intermarriage, because educated minority group members often attend integrated colleges, and their workplaces and neighborhoods are more racially mixed than in the past. People often marry outside of their racial-ethnic groups because of a shortage of potential spouses within their own group. Acculturation also affects intermarriage rates. Intermarriage is more common among second-generation immigrants than those in the first generation.
