Discuss the Mannerism with reference to Michelangelo’s Last Judgment.
What will be an ideal response?
The development of a new Mannerist artistic vocabulary can be seen in the figura serpentinata (serpentine figure). Mary, who is depicted from no single predominant view, is a great example of the serpentine figure form. She turns her head away from her body toward the left side of the composition. Michelangelo’s challenge to Counter-Reformation principles can be seen in the nudity of a great number of religious figures. This created great controversy in the Church (Reading 20.1). This tension was eventually resolved by having draperies painted over some figures.
