Discuss some of the disadvantages of GPs.

What will be an ideal response?

Given all of the new advances that the GPS has provided for community
corrections, there are also obvious disadvantages such as expense and loss of signal.
Just as with any other satellite device, the GPS offender tracking systems often lose
their signal during bad weather or when in an area densely populated with trees. Of the
disadvantages, the most often noted one is the monetary concern. GPS tracking is
complex and very costly, and in this day of drastic budget cutbacks in community
corrections, many agencies are not willing to designate funding for such contemporary
and often unnecessary devices. Some have suggested that a way to cut back on the
operational costs of GPS devices is to have agencies request the offender’s
whereabouts every 30 min or so as opposed to every minute. Others have suggested
that GPS devices should be reserved for the most serious offenders within the
community such as child molesters and rapists.
