Besides listening styles, describe two different factors that influence listening

Students should provide two of the following three answers:
Gender—Researchers disagree to some extent about differences between men and women in listening, with some finding gender differences and others finding no gender differences. However, three differences have been documented: women are more accommodating and focus on the speaker, men focus on facts and handle distractions better, and men interrupt more than women.

Age—As individuals move from adolescence to young adulthood, their ability to listen increases (college seniors are better listeners than college freshmen). However, as individuals move through adulthood to retirement age, their ability to listen gradually decreases (young managers under 45 have better listening skill than older managers). Also, special listening skills are needed for small children who might find ideas hard to articulate, requiring more patient listening. Further, listening to teenagers requires more patience and restraint because they are learning to be independent.

Nationality—There are no different listening abilities depending on nationality. However, different nationalities have varying nonverbal displays for attentive listening. For example, making eye contact while listening is considered important in the United States, but rude in Vietnam and Thailand.
