Some RIPs are not as toxic as ricin. What is the main difference between toxic and non-toxic RIPs?
What will be an ideal response?
Non toxic RIPs do not cross intact cell membranes very well, therefore they cannot access the ribosomes to inactivate them. Toxic RIPs can cross cell membranes though. They have a domain that binds tightly to glycolipids attached to proteins on cell plasma membranes. This binding causes the cell to take up the RIP by endocytosis.
