Research suggests that as employees age, fluid intelligence declines and crystallized intelligence increases. Given this knowledge, how might a manager use rewards and incentives to motivate aging employees in comparison with younger employees?

What will be an ideal response?

Younger employees may benefit from rewards based on rate of performance, yet
these same pay systems may cause older employees to make less money. Because
the knowledge and experience acquired on the job is often important to the
organization, it is important to design reward systems that take the experience and
knowledge of older employees into account. Thus, a piece rate system may be used to
provide benefit to younger employees, but seniority-based pay may be used to keep older employees motivated and in the workforce.
