Compare the gender role expectations for women in each of the cultures discussed by

Berkowitz and Padavic. What conclusions do you draw?

What will be an ideal response?

Berkowitz and Padavic's research illustrates strongly that a persons income and social status
affects their key values and behaviors. White females in sororities used the sorority as a means
to promote and enhance their social standing, and to promote dating and mating in life.
Although they definitely held career aspirations and expectations, these were not expressed
during the college phase of life. Matrimony was the goal, and females learned to be compliant
and supportive in their quest for their life goals.
Black females also desired the marital goal in life, but deprioritized the quest in preference to
self independence and career goals. Black sororities were structured to assist members
throughout the life experience, and to support black networking and community. Berkowitz
and Padavic saw this value difference as a pragmatic adaptation to difference in life condition
and experience for both categories of people.
