Medicalization refers to the process whereby normal conditions, such as the menstrual cycle, can be viewed as medical conditions that require treatment. For example, considering premenstrual syndrome a diagnosable illness--characterized by pains, anxiety, and depressed mood--encourages views of women’s bodies as regularly sick and unable to function.
