The theft of trade secrets can be divided into the specific acts of industrial or economic
espionage. Industrial espionage is the theft of trade secrets by individuals and companies. With
these crimes a person or a business sponsors or coordinates an intelligence activity for the
purpose of enhancing the competition’s advantage in the marketplace. Economic espionage is
defined by the FBI (2015) as, “foreign power sponsored or coordinated intelligence activity directed at the U.S. government or U.S. corporations, establishments, or persons for the purpose
of unlawfully obtaining proprietary economic information.” It is considered to be one of the
most serious threats to the economic health of the United States
