Describe the formation of coal deposits. What environmental conditions are required to produce these deposits? Why
is coal important? What will be an ideal response?
Coal deposits commonly are formed as a result of swamp environments.. Swamp
environments allow for lush vegetation. Trees and plants die and are buried. Accumulation of dead plants form peat; continued burial of peat results in increased pressure and temperature
over long periods of time eventually form coal. Shallow water in swamps allows preservation
of organic material until it can be buried and transformed into coal. Swamps also commonly
have abundant vegetation. Coal is an important fuel source, especially for industry and
electricity generation.
