Discuss the differences between the conflict and consensus perspectives. How does each perspective view society? How is each related to crime and criminality? Make an argument about which perspective is correct.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers should address the two perspectives. The conflict perspective views
society as composed of groups who disagree about what behaviors should be identified
and codified as crime. The consensus perspective views society as being more
homogenous and capable of agreeing on how crime should be defined. The consensus
perspective focuses on questions such as why people break the law. The conflict
perspective, on the other hand, focuses on the question of why we have laws and how
laws are created (e.g., power differentials) and how society responds to law breakers.
The remainder of the answer will vary based on students’ arguments.
