Describe four functions of dramatic language
What will be an ideal response?
Dramatic language is used to advance the plot of a play, and to provoke and embody action. It is used to express its characters through rhythm, vocabulary, inflection, and dialect, which reflect character's education, class, values, personality, age, and emotional outlook. Playwrights use dramatic language to compress emotion, carefully selecting words for maximum impact to enable emotions and relationships to build quickly. Finally, dramatic language is used to set the mood, tone, and style of a play.
