discrimination based on age. As conflict theorists point out, the elderly have lower status
and prestige in society as a result of ageism. This is especially visible in the workplace and
in the media.
2. When gender, race and ethnicity, and aging intersect, women of color aged 65 and older
have the highest rates of poverty. Many of the people over 65 who are living close to the
poverty line (or at the poverty line) are on Social Security, a federal insurance program
providing benefits to retired workers, disabled workers and their dependents, and survivors
of deceased workers. Despite this, many elderly Americans struggle to make ends meet.
3. As individuals age, they often require help with daily activities and to take care of
themselves. This responsibility often falls to families or nursing homes. Roles also change,
which can lead to isolation and loneliness, and subsequently contribute to poor health
outcomes.
