The general environment consists of demographic trends, economic trends, political/legal trends, sociocultural trends, technological trends, global trends, and physical environment trends. These trends are general in that they cut across firms and industries. It is important that firms follow trends in these components because from them both opportunities and threats will emerge. Without understanding these opportunities and threats firms would be establishing objectives that may be unrealistic and then developing strategies to achieve them that are less than effective.
