Select a problem in living related to a life transition that is predictable for many people. Devise a prevention strategy for helping people anticipate and thus cope more effectively with that problem than they otherwise might.
What will be an ideal response?
The examples of leaving home for college, or leaving college to find full-time work, are particularly good for this assignment given that all students can relate to them. Acceptable preventions strategies include any steps taken by students to understand in advance what challenges are involved in the transition, and putting resources and supports in place so that those challenges can be met effectively. Prevention strategies should not include, however, practices that may prove harmful for managing the transition in the long run (such as substance abuse or excessive avoidance strategies). Students should complete this as a written assignment because it is interesting for them to see in a subsequent discussion what their peers noted as prevention strategies. No single student will think of “everything”.
