Discuss the “dark side” of social media and the risks this presents to public relations.
What will be an ideal response?
For all the fun, engaging and exciting aspects of social media, there is a dark side too. Any organization can be targeted with fake news, negative memes and other cyber-attacks designed to negatively influence public beliefs and opinions. Because information can travel very quickly, cyber-attacks pose a serious risk to an organization’s perceived credibility and trustworthiness.
Another dark side of social media is the impact digital communications have had on public relations activities. Real time capability means reporters expect websites to have up-to-the-second information. Content will need to be continuously screened and organized to ensure journalists have what they need, when they need it. Real time communication combined with the 24/7 nature of social media has increased public relations work-load and job-related stress
PR professionals should expect to deal with and manage the dark side of social media at any time, and accept is it a part of public relations that will continue into the future.
