Examples of toxic pollutants include hydrocarbons (such as oil), pesticides such as DDT, and heavy metals such as mercury and lead Biological pollutants are non-native species introduced to marine ecosystems through human activities. Without natural predators in their new environment, non-native species can quickly multiply and become invasive, displacing native species from their niches in the ecosystem. Zebra mussels and water hyacinths are examples of introduced invasive aquatic species.
