“The norm of reciprocity . . . often elicits compliance.” What does that statement mean, and how does it relate to interpersonal communication?

What will be an ideal response?

The norm of reciprocity means that when someone does something for us, we may often feel obligated to return the favor, even when the person may not be someone we like very much. Because we have this feeling that we need to reciprocate, the norm often leads to our compliance of the other’s wishes.
